**A Monk of the Meadow**

*By David Beers*

How do I find my peace?

Where do I go to pray?

Where is the center of my being?

What words am I to say?

Many would tell me: close your eyes,

Find a comfortable seat,

Count your breath, both in and out,

And feel the ground beneath your feet.

Others say the place to be

Is in a cloistered, silent cell,

With cot and chair and candle lit,

A Bible, cross, and stillness to dwell.

Chanting psalms and sacred texts,

And holy mantras said with grace,

To eat in silence, live alone—

A somber meter to set life’s pace.

But that’s not life for me, I know;

Against such solitude I’d soon rebel.

To be alone would bring me grief,

A sadness I know well.

For I am a monk of the meadow,

A mystic of the field.

An abbot of the sacred grove,

Divine creation’s mission revealed.

The morning sun in eastern sky

Creates my rose window of light.

On wings of birds my hymns do fly,

My prayers borne in their flight.

I walk upon a carpet of flowers,

Their petals a rainbow parament.

Their scent rises—incense to heaven.

Angels light the stars, candles across the firmament.

I am a monk of the meadow,

A mystic of the field.

The crickets chirp, the toads they hum—

A sacred chant of their own.

The feel of grass and soil beneath my feet

Grounds me to the Earth, my home.

One with the earth, sky, and sea,

In harmony with all I seek to dwell.

A part of the cosmos flows through me—

That is the gospel I come to tell.

I am a monk of the meadow,

A mystic of the field.

The babbling brook, the whispering wind

Proclaim a unity, all things divine.

No matter how life’s river bends,

Along that path my journey I define.

While many find their sacred space

Alone in peaceful solitude,

And others seek the mountaintop

To bring them to a reverent mood,

I walk through alpine glens

Beneath the snowy mountain shield.

Their icy streams renew my soul,

A pass of grace to me revealed.

For I am a monk of the meadow,

A mystic of the field.
